September 3 , Also Known For : Murderer Birth Place : Chelsea , Massachusetts , United States of America Died On : November 25 , Zodiac Sign : Virgo Albert DeSalvo Biography, Life, Interesting Facts Albert Henry DeSalvo was born on September 3rd, in He was a notorious criminal born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.

Between and , DeSalvo confessed to having strangled 13 women to death. However, he was only jailed for his rape cases as his murder confessions were only met with disputes.

Albert DeSalvo was born on September 3rd, in His place of birth was in Chelsea, Massachusetts. His father, Frank DeSalvo was an alcoholic.

Droney, Bridgewater Superintendent Charles Gaughan, and George W. Harrison, a former fellow inmate of DeSalvo's. Harrison claimed to have overheard another convict coaching DeSalvo about details of the strangling murders.

DeSalvo's attorney Bailey believed that his client was the killer, and described the case in The Defense Never Rests She argues that the murders were the work of several killers rather than a single individual.

Former FBI profiler Robert Ressler said, "You're putting together so many different patterns [regarding the Boston Strangler murders ] that it's inconceivable behaviorally that all these could fit one individual.

John E. Douglas , the former FBI special agent who was one of the first criminal profilers, doubted that DeSalvo was the Boston Strangler.

In his book The Cases That Haunt Us , he identified DeSalvo as a "power-assurance" motivated rapist. In , attorney and former print journalist Elaine Sharp took up the cause of the DeSalvo family and that of the family of Mary Sullivan.

Sullivan was publicized as being the final victim in , although other strangling murders occurred after that date. Sharp assisted the families in their media campaign to clear DeSalvo's name.

She helped organize and arrange the exhumations of Mary Sullivan and Albert H. DeSalvo, filed various lawsuits in attempts to obtain information and trace evidence e.

Sharp noted various inconsistencies between DeSalvo's confessions and the crime scene information which she obtained. For example, she observed that, contrary to DeSalvo's confession to Sullivan's murder, the woman was found to have no semen in her vagina and she was not strangled manually, but by ligature.

Forensic pathologist Michael Baden noted that DeSalvo got the time of death wrong. This was a common inconsistency also pointed out by Susan Kelly in several of the murders.

She continues to work on the case for the DeSalvo family. On July 11, , the Boston Police Department released information stating that they had found DNA evidence which linked DeSalvo to the murder of Mary Sullivan.

Y-DNA is passed through the direct male lines with little change and can be used to link males with a common paternal-line ancestor.

To determine conclusively that it was DeSalvo's DNA, a court ordered the exhumation of his body in order to test his DNA directly.

On July 19, , Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley , Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley , and Boston Police Commissioner Edward F.

They had not seen Blake for a couple of days and feared that perhaps she was sick, though Blake, a sixty-five-year-old ex-nurse, had not complained of any maladies.

They decided to go into her apartment, number 90, directly across the hall from them. They got the key from the superintendent of the building and entered the apartment.

They took one look at the apartment, which had been ransacked, and, too scared to go farther, called the police. The police found Helen Blake on her bed, facedown.

She had been violently strangled with her own stockings, her legs were spread wide, and her brassiere had been placed under her neck with the ends arranged to form a bow.

She had been violated with a foreign object. Police theorized that she had been killed in the kitchen, then carried into the bedroom and her body assaulted there.

At the time, Boston and Lynn had different police departments with separate jurisdictions, but they were aware to some degree of what was going on in adjacent areas.

When the police commissioner heard about the body found in Lynn, he articulated what every officer was feeling. Then, the body of seventy-five-year-old Ida Irga was discovered on August 21 in her apartment on Grove Street in Boston.

She had been sexually assaulted with a foreign object and her body had been placed so it faced the door and would be the first thing the person entering would see.

The medical examiner calculated that she had been dead for two days. Boston shivered despite the summer heat.

The Strangler was back, and women started taking extraordinary precautions: not going anywhere without a companion, not letting anyone into their apartments, using three and four locks on their doors.

The Murders Continue The police were under great pressure to solve the case and catch the killer, and in desperation they called in the FBI to educate their detectives on murders involving sexual assault.

There was also a distinct feeling, almost percent certainty on the part of the police, that the Strangler would strike again and would continue to kill until he was caught.

They had to get the guy. Sullivan, a heavyset person, was found facedown in six inches of water in the bathtub in a half-kneeling position, her housecoat was thrown over her shoulders, her girdle pulled up on her back, her panties down about her ankles, and her buttocks exposed.

She had been strangled with her own stockings. Her body was too decomposed to determine whether she had been sexually assaulted, but the way the body was found as well as the similarities to the other murders led police to believe that she had been.

It was also determined that she had died on August 20, which had a chilling implication. Ida Irga had been killed on August The Strangler had killed both women in less than twenty-four hours.

The police efforts to track down the Strangler intensified, and police work went on around the clock.

All the stops were pulled out: Hundreds of known sex offenders were rounded up, psychologists were called in to profile the killer, fifty detectives worked on the cases full-time and went door-to-door trying to get some sort of lead.

All the work seemed to be paying off - there were no killings in September or October, and Thanksgiving passed tensely but uneventfully.

His victim deviated sharply from the profiles of his previous victims: She was not elderly and white but young and black. Serial killers rarely if ever deviate from their victim type, but the crime scene bore the unmistakable modus operandi MO of the Strangler: Sophie Clark was lying on the living room floor and her legs, in black stockings, were wide apart.

Having made his point, he withdrew the resolution. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. American criminal and convicted rapist. This article needs additional citations for verification.

New evidence links local to Boston Strangler victim". Wicked Local. Retrieved November 28, Malden, MA Patch. July 11, The victim was year-old widow Ida Irga.

She had been strangled and she was on her back on the floor wearing a brown nightdress, which was ripped and exposed her body.

Her legs were apart and resting on two chairs and a cushion had been placed under her buttocks. Again there was no sign of forced entry.

Less than 24 hours later, the body of Jane Sullivan was found not far from the previous victim at Columbia Rd in Dorchester.

The year-old nurse had been murdered a week before and was found dead in the bathroom. She had been strangled by her own nylons.

Terror spread throughout Boston as the city feared another attack, but it was three months before the Strangler struck again.

This time the victim was young. Twenty-one-year-old Sophie Clark was an African American student who was very mindful of her safety, and rarely dated.

Her body was found on December 5, , a few blocks away from the first victim, Sleser. Clark was found nude and had been sexually assaulted.

She had been strangled by her own stockings and semen was discovered for the first time. Somehow, despite Sophie's precautions, she had still let in the murderer.

Although Clark did not fit the same profile as the other victims, the police were sure it was the work of the same killer. Furthermore, this time they had a lead regarding the killer's possible identification.

A female neighbor informed the police that a man had knocked on her door, insisting that he had been sent to paint her apartment. He finally left after she told him that her husband was sleeping in the next room.

Three weeks later, another young woman's life ended tragically. Twenty-three-year-old Patricia Bissette was pregnant when she was found dead in her apartment near the area where Slesers and Clark had lived.

Bissette was discovered by her boss when she didn't turn up for work. Her body lay in her bed covered by sheets, and she had been sexually assaulted and strangled with her own stockings.

While the city appeared to have been spared another attack for several months, the police desperately tried to find any connection between the women and people they may have known.

Every sex offender on the Boston Police files was interviewed and checked, yet still nothing turned up.

Before long, a series of murders started again. This time the body of year-old Mary Brown was found strangled and raped 25 miles north of the city in March Two months later, the ninth victim, Beverly Samans, was found.

The year-old graduate had missed choir practice on the day of her murder, May 8, Samans was found with her hands tied behind her back with one of her scarves.

A nylon stocking and two handkerchiefs were tied around her neck. Bizarrely, a piece of cloth over her mouth hid a second cloth which had been stuffed in her mouth.

Four stab wounds to her neck had most likely killed her rather than strangulation.
